Longwall face

In mining, a long exposed underground rock face from which minerals are extracted. Depending on the geological conditions and the system adopted for development of the deposit, the longwall face may measure 25-350 m or more.

Cutting, loading and transportation of coal from longwall faces was mechanised at 85% of Soviet mines in 1971.

The term was originally used at mines in the Donbass region; in literature, it first appeared in A I Kuprin's story "In the Depths of the Earth" (1899).
