KIEV, December 19. DTEK's Innovation from the Depth Project for introduction of heat pumps at Blagodatnaya Mine of DTEK Pavlogradugol has been rated best in energy efficiency at Green Awards Ukraine 2011, competition for business and social green projects.
The Best Energy Efficiency Project nomination gathered most participants. The international jury named DTEK the best among the four semi-finalists pointing out DTEK's innovative technology, cooperation with Ukrainian scientists and use of Ukrainian equipment.
The project inspired interest abroad. According to Eckehard Buescher, International Projects Manager of the German Geothermal Center (Bochum, Germany) it is the first industrial unit in the world that uses mine water.
“DTEK has a comprehensive approach to energy efficiency of its operating companies. The project on the use of mine water heat is a part of the campaign aimed at reducing consumption of electricity, heat and other resources. The amount of the project investments totaled about UAH 4 m. The annual savings are more than UAH 600 thou. The heat pump unit is capable of heating 9 times more water than the company requires. So it can be used to meet the needs of the neighboring towns and villages,” Aleksandr Tolkach, DTEK Director for External Affairs, said.

In 2010, Blagodatnaya mine of DTEK Pavlogradugol installed heat pumps to use hot water for domestic needs. Dnepropetrovsk National Mining University and Refma Melitopol Refrigirator Factory took an active part in designing and manufacturing the equipment.
The heat pump unit functions as a refrigerator: it takes in heat from any low potential energy sources and releases it into a condenser. It operates at night when electricity tariff is three times lower. The payback period is 6.5 years.
